In 1961, when V. K. Krishna Menon was India’s Defence Minister, he was the first person to start the Sainik school. The Sainik Schools Society, which is part of the Ministry of Defence (MoD), runs these schools. This is how public schools work in India.

The main goal of these schools is to prepare kids academically, physically, and mentally so that they can get into the National Defence Academy or the Indian Naval Academy. As of 2024, there are 33 Sainik schools on the list, and 100 more are planned to open through a public–private partnership (PPP) between the MoD and private schools.

The MoD and the governments of the different states work together to run these schools. The Ministry of Defence will give money every year. The infrastructure, land, administrative staff, and other training tools are all provided by the State Government.
